Top 250 Singles of 2013

Since we're in the Cloud Age, where things are headed more and more towards streaming seemingly everyday, I have to expand the definition of what exactly qualifies as a single. For the purpose of this list, any song that was uploaded to Soundcloud by the artist or their record label automatically qualified, even if it wasn't for sale or didn't have a video. By far this was the most most intimidating year to put together a singles list because there always felt like there was something new right around the corner that I might have missed, which is thrilling for a music fan. I've included a Spotify playlist of the songs and for those that weren't on there, I've included an asterisk (*) to help you out. If it's not on there, it's likely on Soundcloud and if it's in the top 100, I'd especially recommend putting forth the effort to search for it. Make sure to check out my albums list as well.

1. Pharrell Williams - Happy

"It might seem crazy what I'm about to say." Hard to believe that we're at the point where we have to almost apologize for being in a good mood. Often times, I find songs dedicated to joy to be the most fearless in today's cynical world and there are fewer that blare the horn of happiness louder than this one. For the purpose of full disclosure, The Neptunes are among some of my favorite artists of all-time, so there's always something welcoming for me when one of them hits their stride. Regardless, I think anyone would have won me over with such a jubilant gospel shuffle. It's a solid foundation to start with, but then there's that chorus. That sunny, carefree, defiant, Nobel Peace Prize-worthy chorus. So pure in its mission to save the world and help you leave negativity behind that it even brought along hand claps to ease the transition. It's true power isn't revealed until towards the end of the song where its repetition is so forceful that it won't be satisfied until vessels burst in your cheeks from smiling too hard. Music is at its best when the artist can project their feelings onto you and you're able to empathize. "Happy" was the best such example this year for me.

2. KING - In The Meantime

If this song existed in physical form and I were able to touch it, I'm positive it would feel like velvet. There's a tenderness that gives an immediate sense of comfort, yet it's slick and sensual enough that it begs grasping repeatedly. Most of the music released so far by these three ladies is like that, wrapped in soulful analog textures that glow with a soft, summery hum. "In The Meantime" finds them taking inspiration once again from Stevie Wonder, with a keyboard riff that's remniscent of his 1970s output. It gives a sense of familiarity that also feels refreshing due to its subtlety and lack of overproduction. Everything here is crafted with the type of precision that having a jazz background includes, but there's something intimate and homegrown about it that affects more than just my ears. It feels like actual soul music, not just by it's definition and traits, but in the sense that it taps into something within you that's difficult to explain but always intoxicating.

3. Katy B feat. Zinc & Wiley - Got Paid*

Part of Katy B's appeal, aside from her excellent taste in producers and observant lyrics, is that all of her records seem so effortless. Where most of her pop contemporaries feel the need to scream, grind, bellow, yell, growl or chirp to match the aggressiveness of a dance beat, Katy's voice just melds beautifully with the whole thing to make it uniform. On this track taken from last year's Danger EP, she once again brings that cool to a pounding track worthy of fist pumps and it's no less euphoric because of her calm presence. She also has a way of making the universal not sound idiotic. I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't like getting paid on a Friday and it's certainly a topic that's been covered before, but she approaches it with such wide-eyed amazement that you get the sense nothing can or will go wrong.

4. Alpine - Gasoline

One of my favorite sounds of 2013 came from this song, with the slightly arpeggiated guitar that skips around so delightfully despite the longing displayed in the song. It's a worm of a riff that's easy to catch on too and would have you believe the song is all about good times. When you look beyond that deceptive catchiness, "Gasoline" is simply about wanting a lover during the AM hours instead of being a late night call and the tone of the music fits more than you think. Yes, it's true that the narrator in the song can't have what they want, but what they want is so stimulating and could conceivably bring about an optimistic outlook. They're a fool for lust, and that's something that makes you want to bounce around when appeased properly, which is likely why those synths work so well.

5. Kanye West - Bound 2

There's a chance that we're all being trolled here. Kanye has been better lyrically when opening up his heart and even at his goofiest, he's never invoked something like the spirit of Martin for as many measures as he did on "Bound 2." Sometimes I can't shake the feeling that it's all one big practical joke to see what consumers are willing to accept, then I hear Charlie Wilson bare his soul and I'm a little less skeptical. As accessible as this song was (when compared to the rest of Yeezus), there's still plenty to sift through and decipher. Was Kim's love life really in a state of despair before she hooked up with Kanye? Would the lyrics have been more sentimental and classy on any of Kanye's other albums, but purposely kept crude to stay in line with Yeezus? And why don't I care that this song doesn't have any drums? By the end of it, I'm convinced that "Bound 2" was made by someone who's in love, even if it lacked most of the usual attributes we usually associate with such a feeling. It came off as someone who's highly inebriated spilling their guts and caring little for tact, saying whatever comes to mind first. There's no time to go back for editing to make everything appear flowery or to remove any clumsiness. Doing so would have taken away all of the song's authenticity and rawness and we probably wouldn't discuss it as the highlight on one of 2013's best albums.

6. Disclosure - F For You

On an album spoiled with an abundance of infectious beats, "F For You" was the track from Settle that usually got the biggest reaction out of me. It's the one song that goes for the dreamier aspects of Chicago house and uncannily nails it, with the keyboards doing their best to mimic a lush string section and a simplistic verse and chorus that could be memorized after a listen or two. The fact that I grew up in Chicago might lend some bias to my love for this track, but it only makes me appreciate what the Lawrence brothers were attempting even more. The inflection in Howard Lawrence's voice matches the spirit of so many classic tracks, which I felt he did a better job of capturing than most of the talented guest vocalists on the album. It's that sincerity that gives the "F For You" an advantage over the rest of Settle and also makes my Chicago-bred, music nerd brain light up, although I'm usually too busy speeding up my pulse rate to pay attention whenever this comes on.

7. Daft Punk feat. Pharrell - Get Lucky

The unanimous winner of 2013's Voltron award was always destined for success. If such a thing as a four-quadrant song existed, "Get Lucky" would be a terrific example, with nods to both the past and the future and the promise of good times using astral imagery. It's no less accessible than what Daft Punk has done in the past, but this current EDM-obssessed era we're currently in made their return an event. Sometimes that kind of ubiquity can tarnish the image of a song. It starts becoming overplayed (no such thing in my opinion if a song is good), it's not as great as this similar song that never came within sniffiing distance of the Billboard Hot 100 or a host of other silly reasons why we refuse to graze in the same meadow as the rest of the sheep. When looking at who was involved on paper, how could this song not be meant to attract flocks? It shouldn't matter that probably half the people who enjoyed it thought dance music started with David Guetta. What matters is that "Get Lucky" allowed us to hear Nile Rodgers's guitar during a non-retro segment on top 40 radio. What matters is that one of Michael Jackson's main musical progeny crafted a melody worthy of an Off The Wall B-side along with top-notch session players handling the groove. What matters is that we got the precision and care that Daft Punk has always brought to their work for one hell of a song. It fulfilled its potential and will probably be heard at every wedding you attend for the twenty years. We should all be so lucky.

8. Basement Jaxx - What A Difference Your Love Makes

Like the best Basement Jaxx songs, "What A Difference Your Love Makes" is packed to the brim with synths that feel like sunshine with each stab and leave you more prone to jumping instead of grinding. There's really nothing new added to the formula as Felix Burton and Simon Ratcliffe can usually be relied upon for a good time and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. They've made me smile before in the past and even if they're not concerned with current trends, there's something to be said for mastering your brand. Along with some added disco flamboyance, this song is the kind of treat that has a constant air of liveliness that relies on love to function. It's what powers the machine, and when it kicks into high gear, it's just as durable as anything else right now.

9. Ebony Bones - Mystery Babylon Balloon

Surveying the wasteland like a post-punk apocalyptic queen, "Mystery Babylon Balloon" finds Ebony Bones with a commanding sneer that's part-spiked wristbands and part-neon winged eyeliner. It's all too fitting of an approach for a song that crunches with such a methodical gnash, as if it just appeared from the shadows of a nuclear fallout. It also has a bigger than life feel that you don't get too often from rock songs in this era. There are probably only a handful of artists who are true rock stars in the traditional sense that they not only bring an aura of cool, but that they demand your attention in both a fashionable and overt away. Ebony feels just so out in front here, not only as if the song wants to be acknowledged, but herself as a presence refuses to be denied. It's a grandiose statement that doesn't betray her DIY ethos or make her any less punk.

10. Janelle Monáe - Dance Apocalyptic

With the punch of a rock 'n soul revue, Monáe broadcasted the end of the world with an upbeat tone that almost made you forget that there was a zombie in your front yard. It's that kind of contrast and imagination that has made me such a fan of hers. Monáe's music makes me feel like a kid again because it often speaks of a world that I don't know and the older you get with age, what you have not yet experienced becomes smaller and smaller each year. By daring to live in her own universe—which could be seen on its own as a refusal to grow up—there's not much of a limit to what she can do. It's well within reason to have a ukelele be the driving force behind a song that references Juicy J and features onamatopoeias as a refrain, yet dares you to keep your cool during the apocalypse. That it all sounds so fun is what made it one of the best songs of the year.

11. Bunji Garlin feat. Nigel Rojas - Differentology
The rare party anthem that makes you want to parade around the club with a flag. In slow motion preferably.
12. Disclosure - When A Fire Starts To Burn
Might actually create a fire hazard on the dance floor when the bass hits, so be careful out there kids.
13. Pusha T feat. Kendrick Lamar - Nosetalgia
We all know Push is basically the MJ of coke rap, but Kendrick's verse adds a sense of realism that's rarely championed in the subgenre.

Sometime this decade, they'll probably release a greatest hits album and it will likely be one of the finest collections this generation will have.

50. Xenia Rubinos - Help
Sways like a boat with nary a moment for you to regain your balance.

One of the best tracks in our current post-Aaliyah/Timbo climate.
