The tracklisting for Vol. 4 has been laying on my hard drive for months, so I'm a little behind the times. I also try to make the best mix that I can whenver I create the CD, hence the title, 5-Star Mix, because that's the rating I'm trying to achieve, five stars. Here are the previous editions:

For this entry, the artist of choice will be The Concretes. They're an eight piece collective out of Sweden who provide the missing link between The Ronettes and The Velvet Underground. Their self-titled, full-length debut is filled with songs of dreamy heartache and bittersweet melodies. It may sound boring, but the music is achingly beautiful and sweeping at times. The Mazzy Star comparisons are obvious, but I thought I would drop the name just to pique some interest in these tracks. I love this album so much, I'm gonna post 3 songs.

Sorry that this has taken so long, but I've been extremely swamped with school and work. But the good thing is that Monday is right around the corner and there will be more MP3s up soon after my show. But moving along, I've decided to put the spotlight on Asobi Seksu. Mixing elements of shoegazer and pop songwriting, Asobi Seksu have brought beauty back to the art of making noise. Vocalist Yuki gives the music a soft human touch with her yearning vocals complimenting the thrashing and distorted textures of the music. Their debut album, Asobi Seksu, is easily one of my favorites of the year so far. Sure fire top 25, or maybe even higher.
Forgive the lazy writing, I'm very short on time.

Singles Round-up For October 2004

This is the first Singles Round-up for Hectic But Eclectic, which in true HBE fashion is several days late. Hopefully, October isn't too far of a distant memory.

Destiny's Child-Lose My Breath
You know this track means serious business right from the very beginning. Those killer synth stabs. That pounding drum track. Beyonce panting and moaning. Single of the year, right? Great production, but no hook. (Rating on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest and blah blah blah: 6)

Eminem-Just Lose It
I like the video more than the song. Brings nothing new to the Slim Shady persona (5)

Jacki-O F/ Ying Yang Twins-Fine (pictured above)
Your favorite stripper's new favorite song. (9)

Bjork-Who Is It?
One of the more beautiful tracks from Medulla. Must be heard immediately. (9)

Dizzee Rascal-Dream
Gets recognition for being one of the few songs where you can understand what Dizzee is saying. Sampling children's voices are so '98, but damn if they're not effective. (8)

Lil' Jon & The Eastside Boyz-What U Gon Do?
Pounds on you with all its weight, crushing your limbs and eardrums, until you're forced to fight back, throw dem 'bows and get crunk in this bitch. (8)

Snoop Dogg F/ Pharrell-Drop It Like It's Hot
Am I the only who notices the video's resemblance to the video for the "Flava In Ya Ear (Remix)"? Very nice to see the Neptunes come back with some fire after a very lackluster year. (9)

Gwen Stefani-What You Waiting For?
Your album Gwen, after hearing this glamorous piece of vivacious electro-pop. (9)

Chingy-Balla Baby
Gets credit for being less annoying than "Right Thurr". Good job there Chingster! (7)

Modest Mouse-Ocean Breathes Salty
That's right modern rock radio. Don't run towards the light. You've still got some fight left in you. More catchy songs like this will help you to recuperate faster. (8)

Nelly F/ Christina Aguilera-Tilt Ya Head Back
Don't hate just because it's Xtina and Nelly. You know you're digging that "Superfly" sample. (8)

Trick Daddy F/ Twista & Lil' Jon-Let's Go
No one is doubting this song's energy (which "Let's Go" has tons of), but there isn't enough here to make me willingingly seek out this song for repeat listens. (6)

Guerilla Black-Compton
How could anyone say this guy sounds like Biggie? He isn't half as funny. (7)

Usher F/ Alicia Keys-My Boo
Huh? You're gonna follow up "Confessions (Part II)" with this piece of shit? Boo yourself, Mr. Raymond. (4)

R. Kelly/Jay-Z-Big Chips
Was anyone here even trying to achieve something more than just a typical club song? Kels and Jigga completely phone this one in. You'll be struggling to remember the name of this song in a week. (4)

John Legend-Used To Love You
Very refreshing and smooth. The hook man for Slum Village's "Selfish" shows he can do the damn thing on his own. (8)

Utada-Easy Breezy
This doesn't sound like anything else on her album, but it's definitely the catchiest thing on there. Her voice will either make it or break it for you. It's making it for me (9)

Mannie Fresh-Real Big
The best song to come outta Cash Money in years. This is what Cash Money used to be about. Big ass beats. Big ass rims. Big asses. They still haven't changed their motto, but their recent stuff hasn't been as good as their late-90's output. "Real Big" has a helluva monster beat that will have your car speakers begging for mercy and contemplating suicide. P.S. Mannie's skills on the mic are starting to grow on me. Please don't tell anyone. (blushes)
(10)

Kelis F/ Andre 3000-Millionaire
Simply gorgeous. One beauty of a Prince imitation. (10)

Kylie Minogue-I Believe In You
Kylie plus the Scissor Sisters. If that equation doesn't appeal to you, we need sit down and talk, dear. (8)

Mase-Breathe, Stretch, Shake
Sounds like someone couldn't afford the Neptunes, so they had someone role play as them. But who cares, if it's hot, it's hot. (7)

Outkast-Ghettomusick
Wow, this song has been around forever. I could probably listen to it forever as well. Feelin' good, feelin' great, indeed.(10)

Kanye West-The New Workout Plan
Thanks to Kanye's Workout Plan/All the girls think that I'm the man/I dance to this, they go "hot damn"/The Workout Plan is my new jam. (9)

This week, I wanna put the spotlight on Van Hunt. His self-titled debut album came out earlier in the year, but has failed to make any waves. Upon first listen, Van Hunt appeared to be just another ordinary neo-soul release that didn't aim to be anything above decent. Obviously, I wasn't paying much attention the first time. True, Van Hunt neatly stays within the firmly drawn lines of soul music, but it's damn good soul music. Van Hunt's influence of Prince and Marvin Gaye records coupled with the bitter honesty and vulnerability of his lyrics, gives his music enough of an identity in a genre that is nowadays becoming too comfortable with playing it safe. The songwriting ability is already there, as proof in the two songs I'm offering up for download (Expect "Dust" to be in my top 10 or 20 singles. It has one of the best hooks of the year), but it's highly likely that Mr. Hunt's best work is yet to come. Enjoy.

The artist I've decided to highlight for this week are the Mooney Suzuki. They're a band out of New York who are known for cranking out hot, sexy and gritty rock 'n roll ditties, but their latest album, Alive And Amplified, has them singing a different tune. When their 2002 album, Electric Sweat, was released, the Mooney Suzuki were instantly lumped in with the rest of the new wave of garage rock bands that were making a scene at the time (y'know, folks likeThe Strokes, The Hives, blah blah blah...). In effort to further distance themselves from that sub-genre, the usually sweaty and lascivious Mooney Suzuki hooked up with the chart-topping songwriting/production trio, The Matrix, the same folks behind Avril Lavigne's first album and a few joints off the latest Liz Phair. The results are some of the most glossiest and sugary pop rock that you're likely to hear all year. The Mooney Suzuki have channeled the spirits of 70's AM radio to make a fun record that has everyone crying sellout. Too many of the reviews I have read for this album complain about how their sound has changed, but very few talk about the merits of the music. I'm sure those who were major fans of the Mooney Suzuki before must have been really upset at the direction that they are going in, but all I is ask is for anyone to approach this record with a clean slate and observe the music the Suzuki are making now, not what they were doing two years ago.

And if you haven't noticed, I've also posted the video for M.IA.'s "Galang" as well. All of the artwork in the video is her own, but I hope she doesn't take the same credit for the choreography as well. The song is definite hotness, but I think she could stand to learn a new dance move or two.

Have you ever had a dream come true?

I just got through looking at the new Dizzee Rascal video, "Dream". Weird. It's bizarre to see Cap'n Rascal in a such a kiddie setting, but I find the contrast very appealing. I've also noticed that they've added a drum track to the video version of this song, where as the bare bones album version contained only the sample. The drums definitely give it some groove and a more commercial feel, but I like the album version more, only because it's minimalism comes at the perfect time during the album. Click here to see the video for "Dream".

And for those of you who might have missed "Stand Up Tall", the first single from his second album, Showtime, I've offered it up for download. Is it garage? Is it dancehall? Is it jungle? Who cares when the track is this hot? If there were any justice, "Stand Up Tall" would have been setting fire to dancefloors all across this nation.

Told ya that one loss wasn't gonna hurt us. Never count out fantasy football's mightiest team, the Pocket Mice. King Kong ain't got shit on us. Our precious first place will be ours again in no time.

In other news, I got my first paycheck today from my new job. And to celebrate, here is a song by the Isley Brothers. I got a job baby, indeed.

Look for updates every Monday night if you aren't able to listen, but I highly recommend that you should anyway (wink). In what's going to be the norm here, I'm going to highlight one or two artists from my playlist who I think deserve your attention, with a song or two to download along with it(MP3S ARE ONLY UP FOR A WEEK!). First off, the lovely Bebel Gilberto:

Gilberto, the offspring of Brazillian pop legends Joao Gilberto and Miucha, has crafted one of the dreamier and more romantic albums of the year, the self titled, Bebel Gilberto. I feel like falling in love everytime I hear this album. Her sensual, fragile voice does it to me everytime when she sings to me in my room that she misses me "every day I've been away." And the hell with anyone who says that she's not singing to me. Next time you're alone, I dare you to listen to this album with the lights off. You'd feed nitroglycerin to kittens to wish that she was singing those songs about you.

But anyways, the song I've chosen to share is her latest single, "All Around", which pretty much sums up the direction she's headed with this album. She's ditched a lot of the electro-bossa nova touches of 2000's Tanto Tempo and gone into full sophisticated Norah Jones-sippin'-pina coladas-on-the-beach mode. She coos softly into your ear, you slide slowly from side to side to the soft brushes of the drum, softly touching her hips. The strings and flute perfectly set the mood. You think things are going your way, but you're not quite sure. Then everything gradually stops, with only Gilberto's vocals and the strings sustaining, "Do you know," she serenades to you, "how it feels without anyone?" A smile crosses your face as her voice continues to soothe you.

And as for The Go! Team, I couldn't find out too much about them except that they're from Brighton, England and they have a couple of cute chicks in their group. But by listening to their music, one can tell they've obviously spent a lot of time with old 70's pop records and have probably picked up a trick or two from the Dust Brothers. They make giddily, sample-fried songs packed with an insane amount of enegry and very little attention span with plenty of trashy pop tactics, aimed at making you smile and shaking dat ass. Picture a more sluttier, eager to please Avalanches, and you've got The Go! Team. I'm anxiously awaiting the day their debut album, Thunder, Lightning, Strike gets a U.S. release.

Hot damn...

Oh. My. What an amazing show this is. I can't get enough of it. J.J. Abrams, the creator of Felicity and Alias (two shows that I love also) has done it again. For those who don't know, Lost is one of the hottest new shows on network TV this fall, and it comes on Wednesdays on ABC at 8/7C. It's about the survivors of a plane crash stuck on a island that appears to be deserted, but one mysterious badass creature (Let's just say that "Lost" is one show that J.J. Abrams mainstay, Greg Grunberg, will not have a recurring role in) let's them know from time to time that they're not alone. But the cool thing about the show is that it's not strictly sci-fi, but really delves deep into how such a traumatic event has effected all these people. Abrams is a master at developing rich and complex characters and plots that engage the viewer, and he has a bundle of them to choose from with over 10 regulars on the show. For instance, I love the little subtle details that appear in one episode, but aren't explained until several episodes down the line. For example, in the series premiere, Locke (played by Terry O' Quinn, who appears to be another Abrams favorite) was the only one whose face resembled anything close to a smile during all the chaos of the plane crash that was surrounding him as he walked around. So I'm thinking, "Okay, this guy is nuts. Why is he grinning?" In a flashback during last night's episode, it was explained that Mr. Locke was confined to a wheelchair and couldn't walk at all, but somehow, mysteriously after the plane crash, he was able to walk, which I'm sure brought much elation to him. Stuff like that I just love. Lost has it all. Intensity. Drama. Intelligence. It's easily J.J. Abrams most accessible show (the show regularly wins its timeslot, something Alias and Felicity could never do), but only time will tell if it will be its greatest. I must admit that I am worried if the whole concept of Lost will still be intriguing around season 3 or 4, but for now, I'm gonna enjoy the thrill while it lasts.

My beloved fantasy football team has lost their first game of the season. My absurdly optimistic hopes of going 17-0 have been extinguished, but the playoffs are still very likely in this league. See, my fantasy football league is retarded. There are 20 teams in our league, but we have to start two quarterbacks, which doesn't make any sense since there are only 32 NFL teams, which also means that there are several teams in my league are SOL. Next week is an automatic win since my opponent has completely given up on his team, leaving only Torry Holt and two other scrubs on his roster. Never count the Pocket Mice out.

My First, My Last, My Everything

This is Ivan. This is Ivan's blog. This is Ivan's first entry in his blog. From time to time, he will write stuff in here that amuses him, mostly related to music or anything in the entertainment world, or whatever pleases his tiny heart. Ivan is also very busy with school, work and his own radio show, Hectic But Eclectic (Mondays 6:00-8:00 P.M. Central http://www.uicradio.ws), so he asks that you forgive the forthcoming inconsistent updates. Enjoy.
